GET A GRIP SKATEBOARDS™ and GARBAGE PAIL KIDS® JUST REINVENTED THE WHEEL
NEW YORK. April 21, 2020. Newly established Skate Brand GetaGripSkateboards and The Topps Company, creator of the renowned-yet-subversive Garbage Pail Kids® brand (“GPK”), have teamed up for a collaboration of epic and ground-breaking proportions.
The collaboration, licensed by Topps, will feature both classic retro artwork and photography, as well as all-new 1980s skateboard inspired artwork from renowned GPK illustrators.
To kick-flip it all off, May 1st will see the release of a world first – a blind bagged, GPK collectible skateboard wheel set. Foil wrapped and blind packaged, each packet will contain one wheel featuring one of eight fan favorite GPK characters. Word on the street is that there will be a chase wheel to collect, as well as a “Super” rare, one-off wheel, hidden away in just one of these bags, ready to be busted out and released to the world.
Designed to be displayed as collectibles, these are 100% authentic, high performance skateboarding wheels, and so if the mood takes you, you can slap these 53mmx33mm street wheels to your deck and get riding.
As if that were not intriguing enough, just two weeks later, May 14th will see the first actual skateboard release from GetaGripSkateboards (“GAGS”). A Limited-Edition deck of just 300 quantity – USA printed and made. Expect a first glimpse of this deck design a week after the wheels drop – but wait, there’s more! We caught up with the two mysterious founders of GAGS, Ray Decay and Dead Ted (possibly not their real names!), and they let the cat out of the bag that there would be a further 5 deck release (with a twist!) very soon after that – and even more decks, more wheels and clothing too, in the pipeline!
Ray and Ted also explained how this unique partnership came about: “Get a Grip Skateboards was EXPLICITLY formed out of an incomprehensible addiction and passion for GPK. We liked what Santa Cruz did with their decks back in 2017, but we felt that the story was left unfinished. We approached Topps and asked them if we could write the next chapter in the GPK Skateboard history book, and luckily for us, they said, heck yeah!”
The GAGS founders went on to say: “We are collector’s first and foremost. We had a dream; we are living it right now, and it is time for you to get a grip, get on board, buckle up and join us for one helluva joy ride!”
Ira Friedman, Topps VP of Global Licensing, goes on to say: “The GetaGrip Team oozes tenacity and creativity, which is why we chose to work with them in the first place. Now that we’ve seen what they have planned over the next 12 months, we’re just super stoked to be on this journey with them.”
Series 1 GPK Collector Wheels go on sale from May 1st – exclusively from www.GetaGripSkateboards.com
FYE Launches Garbage Pail Kids Soda

Adam Bomb’s Nuclear Sunrise Orange Soda is being sold in individual bottles within the GPK section for $3.99 each. No word yet if the bottle will be sold on the FYE website. Be sure to check your local FYE to quench your thirst!
Topps March Future Stars Club Featured Garbage Pail Kids
Topps threw another surprise into one of their monthly membership clubs. March’s Topps Future Stars Club was Garbage Paul Kids focused. The regular club comes with 1 monthly blaster box, 1 (5) card exclusive set, and 1 Topps branded item. Collectors who are pare of the monthly club begin receiving their cards recently. March’s set contains 5 reprints from the 2015 GPK Series 1 baseball card insert set. While the fronts are reprints, the backs are new. The Topps Future Stars logo appears along with an advertisement for the monthly club. Each card back also has a “fun fact” about Garbage Paul Kids. It’s too late for collectors now to buy the set from Topps, so collectors will want to look on the secondary market. Collectors also recorded a 2021S1 Food Fight Blaster Tin as part of the Club. The third item, Topps headphones, was not GPK related. Topps continues to throw in GPK in unexpected places.

Work Begins on Garbage Pail Kids 2021S2 Sketches
The set might not have been announced by Topps yet, but that hasn’t stopped the work. Sketch artists began receiving their sketch blanks this week for work on the next Garbage Pail Kids retail set, 2021S2. With no permanent brand manager in place for GPK, employees are getting a head start on the next set to make sure everything stays on track. Multiple sketches artists have revealed that the theme for the next series will be GPKs on Vacation. One good thing about working ahead is artists were given one of the longest deadlines they’ve ever had for this release. Sketches are not due for approval until 7/16, giving artists plenty of time to complete their work. Artists are being asked to complete less sketches as they did for the most recent release, Food Fight. They are scheduled to complete 58 regular, 15 die-cut, 5 loaded puzzle, 3 panoramic, and 3 Tryptych sketches. It would appear production might be down compared to the previous set.
Topps is going with blue for the color scheme for the sketches with this release. The sketch fronts feature blue banners. The nameplate on the regular sketch is yellow. The backs are all blue with various OS characters. Regular sketches feature the return of Adam Bomb, Panoramic sketches have Tommy Tomb, while the Triptych has Silent Sandy and Alice Island. In addition to the traditional garbage can die-cut, there is a car shaped sketch to go with the vacation theme.
The total number of sketch artists for this set will be a little lower than 2021S1 Food Fight. 60 artists completed sketches for the Food Fight set. It doesn’t appear Topps has invited any new artists for this set. So far 56 of the 60 artists from the Food Fight set have confirmed they are doing sketches for the Food Fight set. Set to return are; David Acevedo, Simone Arena, Andrew Artz, Rö García Astorga, Robert Ball, Bobby Blakey, Emma Burges, John Brewer, Neil Camera, Nik Castaneda, Pat Chaimuang, Slippa Chervascus, Daniel Contois, Jasmine Contois, Sobot Cortez, Jeff Cox, Jason Crosby, Vincenzo D’Ippolito, Dave Dabila, Adam Dobrzeniecki, Joey Fitchett, Dave Gacey, Shane Garvey, Patrick Giles, Kelly Greider, Jason Heil, Lowell Isaac, Robert Jimenez, Karl Jones, Rickey Kipfer, Mike McHugh, Rory McQueen, Chris Meeks, Lily Mercado, Rich Molinelli, Victor Moreno, Nik Muggli, Erik Muller, Barry Nygma, Jay O’leary, Justin Olson, Mark Parisi, Darrin Pepe, Todd Rayner, Cathy Razim, Chad Scheres, Brent Scotchmer, Bekki Jane Sharp, Brandhen Snyder, Mike Stephens, Floydman Sumner, Gregory Tilson, Greg Treize, Magnus Von Robotsson, Gavin Williams, and Clinton Yeager. Three artists, Quinton Baker, John Cebollero, and Matt Steffens will not be doing sketches on this set. As of this writing Anthony Skubis have not confirmed if they are returning. Topps is bringing back fan favorite Joe Grotesque for this set. Topps is also debuting a new artists to GPK, RJ Tomascik. This brings the current confirmed sketch artist total to 58 so far. This article will be updated as any additional artists come forward.
Hopefully Topps will send out the sell sheets soon for the set. 2021 Garbage Pail Kids Series 2 is expected to launch this fall.
Topps Taking Company Public In Merger With Mudrick Capital
Topps announced today they will be merging with Mudrick Capital Acquisition Corporation and taking taking the company public. The deal is expected to close late 2nd quarter or early 3rd quarter, and values the company at $1.3 billion. Once the deal closes the company will trade on the NASDAQ market under the TOPP symbol. Current Chairman, Michael Eisner, and current CEO, Michael Brandstaedter, will remain in their current rolls with the company. Previous owners, Madison Dearborn Partners will be exiting the company, while Eisner will convert his equity and become the company’s largest shareholder. The company was previously a public company prior to Eisner and Dearborn purchasing it in 2007. To read the fulls details of the deal, visit the release on Topps Investor website.
How does this involve Garbage Pail Kids you wonder? Well besides being made by Topps, today’s release by the company gives some insight to the business, and how the company perceives the brand. As part of an investor slideshow the Garbage Pail Kids brand is listed as one of the company’s key brands, along with MLB, Star Wars, WWE, Formula 1, and UEFA. The is high praise for a brand that was in mothballs just 11 years ago, and was seen as a niche brand.
Additionally, throughout the presentation and in media interviews today, the company and Eisner pushed hard their move to digital and NFTs. Topps clearly sees NFTs as the future of the company. While physical cards aren’t going anywhere, there will be a huge push in 2021 and 2022 into the NFT space. The Garbage Pail Kids brand was called out throughout the presentation for being the guinea pig for NFTs during 2020. It’s also interesting to note the company did $567 million in revenues in 2020, which was a 23% increase over 2019. The company expects to do $692 million in 2021. Currently Topps reports 55% of revenues come from physical trading cards, 6% from digital, and the remaining from their candy and gift card businesses.

GPK Boys YouTube Show Gives Voice to the Collector
What do you get when you mix a Canadian Nasty Nik collector with a crazed Frying Ryan collector from New York? The GPK Boys of course! Hosts Nick Atef and Ryan Kozyra, in addition to producer Mike Paunovich, make up the group bringing Garbage Pail Kids collectors the brand new YouTube show. The show got off the ground with episode 1, when it launched on March 19th. In the first show they review 2021S1 Food Fight, discuss the art of Barry Nibert, and interview popular GPK Breaker Stevie Coachella.
The GPK Boys YouTube show is the first of its kind within the GPK community. Ryan explains how the idea for the show came about, “It was the lack of anything like this in the community, especially with the popularity of YouTube and podcasts. And with the increased popularity of GPK, especially over the last year, we wanted the fans to have some kind of platform. And the last and most important part, was the chemistry I have with my co-host, Nick. I mean, you could get lost in those eyes.” While their online chemistry was great, the show needed something else to really get off the ground as Nick explains, “Ryan and I once hopped on facebook live and had a chat with everyone in the community. From there we always fantasized about doing a talk show of some sort. What really made it happen was Mike Paunovich joining the team. With his guidance the show was born!” Producer Mike was able to bring his media production experience into the fold, and the show was off and running, “I saw Nick and Ryan posting in the groups about the show and I contacted them to selfishly insert myself into their idea. From their videos on the breaks group I could tell they had good camera presence. I saw the potential from the get go and figured I could help them with my background in media production.”
With all three being long time GPK collectors, it’s no surprise they are all focused on the show giving a voice to the collector. Nick said, “I’d love for us to be THE source for GPK culture and happenings in the collector community. I’m a collector that is equally as passionate about the cards as I am the community members behind the cards. Sure the cards are cool as hell, but some of the people attached to them are equally so.” GPK Boys is a show about all things Garbage Pail Kids. They plan to dig into the latest news and collector culture, and highlight the amazing things that make being a part of the GPK community so much fun. Each episode features an interview with a collector or an artist, plus a whole segment of GPK Talk where the boys throw down their OG knowledge and opinions about these epically gross and awesome trading cards.
The second episode launched today! Mike describes the episode as, “The GPK Boys drop their second episode on Easter Sunday, packed with an in-depth review of the bootleg OS16 box, a discussion about the controversial BTS Shammy Awards card, and an exclusive interview with Topps artist Adam Dobrzeniecki.” Collectors can view all episodes and subscribe to the GPK Boys show on their YouTube Page.
Topps Reveals Print Run for Garbage Pail Kids Bizarre Holidays Mar. Week 3
Better late than never. After ending over a week ago, Topps finally revealed the print run for Garbage Pail Kids Bizarre Holidays Mar. Week 3. The set sold 511 copies. That number is down slightly from the first two sets in March, but falls right in line with the majority of sets. So how about the March Week 4 set? After 51 weeks, the forth set from March was scheduled to be the final set in the Bizarre Holidays year long series. However, Topps has not launched the set. Artwork for the set was completed by the original planned release date of 3/23, but now two weeks have come and gone with no GPK releases. No one is willing to talk about why the set hasn’t been released. Topps has not responded to a request from GPKNews on a reason why the set wasn’t launched. Collectors are left to speculate on why the set hasn’t launch, and when/if it will.
