Artists Begin Work on 2019S2 Revenge of Oh the Horror-ible Sketches

Updated 9/21 – Removed Lowell Isaac and Bryan Abson.

Topps sketch artists have begun receiving their sketch blanks for 2019 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Revenge of Oh the Horror-ible. Artists will be hard at work over the next few weeks completing the sketches for the next retail set. Topps has given artists a 8/5/19 due date for sketches giving artists just over 6 weeks to get them completed. While that’s not a ton of time, it is more than the artists got the the previous set, We Hate the 90’s. Each artist being asked to complete 37 Regular, 5 Loaded, 12 Shaped, 3 Panoramic, and 3 Tryptych sketches. Those numbers pretty much fall in line with the previous set. The number of shaped sketches is double what was asked for on the previous set. Does this mean production on Collector cases will be way up with this set? The number of regular sketches is up slightly, but it appears the number of artists is slightly down for this set.

In a bit of a disappointing move, Topps is keeping the green colors used on the 2019S1 set for the sketches. The fronts of the sketches appear to be exactly the same as the We Hate the 90’s set. Both the Garbage Pail Kids banner and nameplate are green. Just like with the 2018S2 Oh the Horror-ible set there will be two different shaped sketches. Artists were given half of their die-cuts in the regular garbage can version, while the other half are a tombstone die-cut. 2018S2 had coffins as the additional die-cut. The backs of the sketches feature some familiar OS characters. Dead Ted, Weird Wendy and Tommy Tomb.

The confirmed sketch lineup appears to be down from the previous set. 2019S1 We Hate the 90’s had 56 artists complete sketches. So far 49 of the 56 have confirmed they will be completing sketches for 2019S2 Revenge of Oh the Horror-ible. The returning artists are: David Acevedo, Simone Arena, Ro Garcia Astorga, Quinton Baker, Michael Barnard, Bobby Blakey, John Brewer, Neil Camera, Pat Chaimuang, Daniel Contois, Jasmine Contois, Sobot Cortez, Jason Crosby, Shawn Cruz, Dave Dabila, Vincenzo D’Ippolito, Joe Dobbins, Joey Fitchett, Shane Garvey, Patrick Giles, Daniel Goodroad, Dennis Gortakowski, Kelly Greider, Jason Heil, Robert Jimenez, Rickey Kipfer, Mike McHugh, Rory McQueen, Chris Meeks, Lily Mercado, Ryan Moffett, Rich Molinelli, JM Monserrat, Victor Moreno, Barry Nygma, Jay O’Leary, Darrin Pepe, Steve Potter, Todd Rayner, Chad Scheres, Brent Scotchmer, Anthony Skubis, Matt Steffens, Mike Stephens, Floyd Sumner, Gregory Tilson, Dan Burn Webster, Gavin Williams and Clinton Yeager. Emma Burges, David Gacey, Lowell Isaac, Paul Mangione, Joe McWilliams, Cathy Razim, and Magnus VonRobotsson for various reasons will not be completing sketches on this set. Once again, for the second set in a row, there have been no new sketch artists identified. However, there are 2 artists returning to GPK sketches cards after a break; Simon Jacobsohn and Jon Gregory. This brings the current total of sketch artists to 51. This article will be updated as new artists are confirmed.

As the release date gets closer in Aug/Sept previews of some of the sketches should start popping up. 2019 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Revenge of Oh the Horror-ible is set to release in stores on Sept. 25, 2019.

San Diego Comic Con Shaping Up to be Big for GPK Collectors

The last few days have been interesting for news on the Garbage Pail Kids license front. Everything might all come to a head with this year’s San Diego Comic Con in July. As we mentioned yesterday SDCC show organizers announced John Pound would be a guest at this year’s show. If that isn’t big enough for GPK fans, there appears to be quite a few licensed items on the horizon. This appears to be the golden age for GPK licensed merchandise.

Last weekend, Topps attended the 2019 Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. Their sole purpose in attending was to promote and sell the Garbage Pail Kids license to perspective companies. These events always bring some news for collectors, and this one didn’t disappoint. A picture to surface online from the Topps GPK booth revealed new GPK mugs will be coming soon. Beeline Creative, the company behind Geekitiki mugs, appears to be making three mugs. The mugs feature Adam Bomb, Bony Tony, and Leaky Lindsay. Attendees at the show mentioned the mugs would be debuting at this year’s SDCC. GPKNews reached out to BeeLine for comment, but the company didn’t respond.

In an article leading up to the Licensing Expo, Topps VP of Global Licensing Ira Friedman also mentioned additional upcoming licensees for the brand. Some like FYE, Jago, and Sprayground have already launched. Beeline was mentioned in the article along with Greenlight and their upcoming GPK themed die-cast cars. Additionally, a company called Ripple Junction has GPK t-shirts in the works according to Freidman. There is no other info for when or where these shirts could be launched. Again GPKNews reached out to Ripple Junction, but did not hear back.

Finally, Super7, a toy and apparel business based out of San Francisco, posted an interesting hint on their social media channels on Monday. In the post they advertised they would soon be revealing their SDCC exclusives for this year. The cartoon character in the post is carrying a bag, that just happened to have the “GPK” licensing logo on it. Once again GPKNews has contacted Super7, we will let you know if we hear anything back.

John Pound Announced for San Diego Comic Con

It’s that time of year again, with just over a month until this year’s San Diego Comic Con, announcements of what you can find at this year’s show are coming out. Yesterday, show organizers announced legendary Garbage Pail Kids artist John Pound will be in attendance. The announcement came within a larger announcement as they released names of special guests attending this year’s show who previously played an important role in SDCC. Pound is mentioned as being on the founding committee for SDCC. This will be a rare public appearance for Pound as he has resisted attending shows and public appearances in recent years. Special guests announced by SDCC usually have their own panel at the show. GPK collectors going to this year’s show will be in for a special treat this year.

Topps Working on New Online Set

Last last night one of the Garbage Pail Kids sketch artists posted on Facebook previously unseen sketch blanks. The blanks appear to belong to an upcoming online offering from Topps. There aren’t many other details that have been revealed about the set. Based on posts from many former sketch artists, only a select number of artists were invited to complete sketches for this set. The title and/or theme of the set appears to be 2019 Scratch & Stink. Will the cards have a scratch & sniff concept to them? Topps previously offered scratch and sniff cards during the ANS sets. The blanks have a light green name plate on the front, with a light/dark green banner. The backs have a camo color scheme on the back with the title 2019 Scratch & Stink. This is the first time sketch artists are being used for an online set, that aren’t also main card artists, since the GPK Classic set almost two years ago. Topps hasn’t revealed any information about the set, including any possible release dates or configuration. Keep checking the Topps online store daily to get your hands on the next online set.

Topps/Luis Diaz Settle Trademark Lawsuit

Back in Oct. 2017 Topps filed a lawsuit against former Garbage Pail Kids artist Luis Diaz alleging that Diaz infringed on Topps’ trademarks and trade dress with his Garbage Parody Kids and Gavage Parody Kids cards. A few months later Diaz countersued Topps alleging that Topps used rejected concepts submitted by Diaz and created cards based on those concepts without compensation. Paul Lesko, a lawyer who also covers card hobby related lawsuits for Cardboard Connection, had a great overview of the lawsuit back in 2018.

Yesterday, as first twitted out by Cardboard Connection, Topps announced in a press release that it has settled the lawsuit with Diaz. The release reads:

NEW YORK, May 23, 2019 – The Topps Company, Inc. is pleased to announce that it recently resolved the lawsuit it brought against Luis Diaz regarding Mr. Diaz’s promotion and sale of GARBAGE PARODY KIDS and GAVAGE PARODY KIDS trading cards, which Topps claimed infringed its intellectual property. Diaz will no longer be creating GARBAGE PARODY KIDS and GAVAGE PARODY KIDS cards. All claims in the lawsuit have been dismissed, and the parties have entered into a confidential settlement agreement that contains terms and protections to ensure against infringement of Topps’ intellectual property.

GPKNews reached out to Diaz for comment. Diaz confirmed that the lawsuit has been settled, but was unable to comment further due to the confidentiality agreement.

GPKNews spoke with Paul Lesko and asked his opinion on the case based on the information filed by the parties with the court. Lesko said, “The case would turn more on who developed the specific artwork first. Whether any of the art is substantially similar would be a jury call, so it all focuses on who created each specific art/card first. From the allegations, I thought both sides could win some claims against each other. So I would consider it to be a wash.”

What the future holds for Diaz and other artists that create GPK themed art appears murky. Should the case had gone to trial many questions around Topps trademarks would have been answered. According to the release Diaz won’t be creating his parody card lines any longer. As to what this settlement means to others Lesko said, “As it’s confidential we can’t determine who won/lost if anyone did. From the press release, I’d have to say it looks like the settlement was more in Topps’ favor simply because it appears Diaz is not making Gavage cards any more. If that’s the case, and taking into account the press release, I’d have to say this suit and resolution is likely a deterrent to others.”

If you don’t already, be sure to follow Paul Lesko on Twitter for all his hobby related lawsuit thoughts.

Jago Studios Officially Launches GPK the Game

364 days ago Jago Studios and Topps announced a partnership to create the first Garbage Pail Kids mobile video game. Almost one year later the game has been officially released. Today Jago Studios officially announced that GPK the Game has been released to the public. The company originally was shooting for a late 2018 launch. Last October the company held a contest that allowed a handful of people to test the game out. Since then they’ve been fine tuning and making some game play changes over the past few months.  Just this past weekend the company released a brand new 15 second trailer of the game showcasing new characters, graphics, and game play.

According to the press release, the card collecting and strategy role playing game, is being launched exclusively on the Apple App Store for iPhones and iPad. When first announced, Jago said the game would also be available for Android devices.Jago tells GPKNews that they are working on an Android version of the game, but no release date is available yet. The game is currently on version 1.0.1 in the App Store. The game works on iPhones or iPads running iOS 11 or higher. The game is free to download and play. While you don’t have to purchase anything to play the game, there are options to spend real money in the game. Card packs range from $4.99 -$12.99, while you can also buy extra coins and gems.

As is the case with Apple launches, the game might not be available at launch in your region. You will need to be patient as Apple propagates the game across all regions. See below for the press release, pictures of game play, and the trailer that was recently released.

2019 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Revenge of Oh the Horror-ible Retail Sell Sheet

That didn’t take long, just after the Hobby sell sheet began making the rounds this morning, the retail sell sheet for the next retail GPK set is out. 2019 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Revenge of Oh the Horror-ible is a sequel based off of last year’s successful Horror themed set. 2018S2 Oh the Horror-ible was one of the most successful selling GPK sets in recent memory for Topps. The artists still had plenty of gags and ideas that were not used from the last series, so this Halloween season will feature another round of horror themed cards. A number of changes are being made to the set compared to the last one. What’s not changing is the number of base cards. The set is scheduled for 200 base cards made up of 100 new pieces of artwork with a/b name versions.

It would appear the final nail in the coffin has been made to gravity feed boxes. Once again they are not being offered to retail partners. Topps also didn’t make the Dollar Store feeds for the last set, We Hate the 90’s. It would appear the popular with collector boxes are now a thing of the past. However, there will still be plenty of retail options. The regular retail display 24 pack box will return once again. These are marketed and sold by Topps to both retail partners and hobby distributors. While some places still call them Hobby Boxes, they are the same exact box as a retail display box. As with all retail pack types, the renamed Blood Splatter Green parallels will come one per retail pack. Blood Splatter Gold parallels numbered out of /50 can be found in all pack types. While Artist Autographs, Printing Plates, and regular Sketches will also be randomly inserted in all retail pack types. Blood Splatter Yellow borders parallels are scheduled to return to display boxes for this set. They are advertised to be inserted at 1:4 packs, like the previous set. Display boxes is also where you will be able to find the Trick or Treats insert set. While GPKNews hasn’t been able to confirm, GoGTS is reporting that a case of Value Boxes will contain 40 boxes this time! This would be up dramatically from the 16 boxes they have been in the past.

Value Boxes, formerly referred to as Blaster Boxes, are back once again. This time with a major change. Gone are Bathroom Buddies and Gross Bears. For years now these boxes contained reprints from these past Topps sets. Collectors have grown tired of the inserts, which bore little to no resemblance to GPKs. A brand new insert called GPK Horror Victims will be taking their place. Each box will received 3 GPK Horror Victim cards. These, “bonus cards”, are described as GPK characters meeting their untimely end. Once again, Loaded Sketches will be randomly inserted into Value Boxes.

Fat Packs are back and have a familiar structure. Each Fat Pack will come with 2 Green parallels and 1 of the returning Blood Splatter Purple parallels. The OS reprints will also return to Fat Packs. Each pack is scheduled to receive 2 Classic Monster insert cards. Panoramic sketches will also be inserted into Fat Packs.

Topps Announces 2019 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Revenge of Oh the Horror-ible

Last year’s Oh the Horror-ible set was largely well received by collectors. So much so, that the second retail set of 2019 will once again feature the horror theme. Today, Topps announced 2019 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Revenge of Oh, the Horror-ible. The artists had so many fantastic gags left over from last year’s set, they were primed and ready to paint an entire set this time featuring only horror themed cards. The set’s theme isn’t the only former idea being used in this set.

This is the first set completely under the direction of Topps Brand Manager Jessica Kanzer, who replaced Colin Walton last year. David Gross and his fellow artists pushed Topps for a number of changes collectors have been asking for over the years. In the end some changes were implemented, while others will have to wait for future sets. Cards will once again feature a similar themed subset approach as previous sets with card numbers appearing on the backs. One big change for collectors is the pairing down of final art artists in the set. While the sell sheet doesn’t specify who is completing final art, sources say only Brent Engstrom, Joe Simko, David Gross, and Smokin’ Joe McWilliams will have art featured in the set.

According to the sell sheet the new set will feature 200 base cards, made up of 100 pieces of new artwork available in a/b versions. While the familiar parallel format returns for the most part, the names have changed. All Hobby and Retail packs will contain one Blood Splatter Green parallel. Blood Splatter Gold parallels will once again be numbered /50, and are available in all pack types. Blood Splatter Blue /99, and Blood Splatter Red /75 parallels will only appear in Collector packs. The former Black Bruised parallels have changed to the brand new Black Light parallel found 1 per Collector pack. Hobby Boxes will once again contain the Trick or Treats insert set. While, Collector packs will contain an insert set called Horror Film Poster Parodies. These are Wacky Packages inspired parodies of famous horror films. Most likely these will fall one per Collector Box.

Artist autographs and printing plates will continue to be found in all pack types. Hobby and Retail packs will have regular sketches inserted. Collector boxes once again will feature, either a shaped sketch, artist auto, or printing plate. The three panel foldout Tryptych sketches will return again and be found in Collector packs. Collector boxes will also now feature a brand new Tombstone Figurine. Coming 1 per box, there are 12 total to collect. These measure 3″ x 1 7/8″ and will be inserted in blind box packaging according to the sell sheet.

While there are some positive changes with the new set, many more will have to wait for future sets. Once we get retail sell sheet info, I will pass it along. For now you can see the sell sheet here in PDF form, or check out the pictures below. 2019S2 GPK Revenge of Oh, the Horror-ible is set to hit stores on Sept. 25, 2019.

FYE Planning Big Garbage Pail Kids Launch for Monday

After their launch of a Garbage Pail Kids themed energy drink a few weeks ago, FYE has bigger things in store. Details have slowly been coming out over the past few days regarding a number of new items FYE is planning on officially launching on Monday. Officially licensed cereal, candy bars, and a new t-shirt are the latest items that have surfaced. Fans can expect to find these items in FYE stores and online at FYE.com beginning Monday, 5/13.

Garbage Pail Kids Cereal

Collectors will find all new artwork surrounding the entire box from GPK artist Joe Simko. While Adam Bomb is the highlighted character, numerous characters can be found on all the panels. The back of the box even features some games like many children’s cereal boxes do. Advertised as “Crazy Crisps with Marshmallow Barf Bits”, the cereal looks like pink Rice Krispies with some Lucky Charms marshmallows mixed in. The box also advertised 2 trading cards inside. Each box comes with two different stickers. There are a total of 4 stickers in the set. Each card features a different classic character with their cereal. There are no nameplates on the fronts, however the cards are numbered 1f-4f. Both the Topps logo and the FYE logo also appear on the fronts. The backs of the cards when combined form a puzzle of the main front box artwork. Some collectors have found boxes in their FYE stores already. Many have to ask a manager to sell it to them early. Collectors are saying each box of cereal is $12 in store. Thanks to GPK collector Joshua Taylor for the pictures. Check out the end of the article for pictures of the cards, and all box panels.

Garbage Pail Kids Candy

Also launching on Monday are two GPK candy bars. The Blasted Bar which is advertised as a cherry flavored poping candy milk chocolate bar features Adam Bomb artwork. The candy itself is chocolate with candies mixed in. The Leaky Bar is a green citrus frosting filled white chocolate bar. This one is a green colored white chocolate, hollow inside, and filled with a green frosting. As with the cereal some FYE stores have the candy bars available early. The bars retail for $2.99 in the store. Thanks for Steve Sodergren for the candy pictures.

Garbage Pail Kids T-shirt

A new licensed t-shit featuring brand new artwork by Joe Simko will also be launching soon. This light blue t-shirt is again highlighted by Adam Bomb, but features some other classic characters. The shirt will be available is sizes S-2XL and will retail for $21.99. There is a link on fye.com for the shirt already, and the 2XL size is available to order early. FYE stores should also be getting the shirts beginning next week.

Original article…

HobbyDB and GeePeeKay today announced they have launched an exclusive Art by John Pound sticker card collection. The first card is available for sale today at HobbyDB’s website. The officially licensed Topps card features the Adam Bomb concept artwork by John Pound. The company is planning on launching one card per week over the next six weeks. The first card is called the White Border Variant and is limited to 1000 copies. Every Wednesday through May 22 a new card will be made available for purchase. Each week the print runs get smaller, with the last card only having a print run of 50. While the first card won’t be numbered, the remaining cards will all be limited and numbered on the backs.

In order to obtain each weekly card, collectors must first complete a task on the HobbyDB website. The first task is simple enough, signup and register on the HobbyDB website. After signing up, collectors can then purchase the first card through the website’s marketplace. The cards are limited to one per user, with the first card costing $7.99, with free shipping. The promotion is a way to get collectors familiar with the HobbyDB services they will be offering. HobbyDB is trying to create a number of databases for collectors of all types of collectibles to help manage their collections. GeePeeKay.com has partnered with HobbyDB to help create the database and launch this product. (Full disclosure, GPKNews has a working relationship with GeePeeKay, but is not involved in the launch of the product.)

This is the first officially licensed Topps product from HobbyDB. If you recall a few months back, the company asked for input on a possible high end licensed Adam Bomb statue they were working on developing. On Monday in a release on their website the company stated that plans for the statue were on hold. They said, “Although we would have loved to offer a statue, as originally planned, a cost explosion of Adam Bomb proportions would have run up the retail cost of the collectible to somewhere between $400 and $500. We haven’t given up on the idea, but we’re equally, if not more, excited to offer the opportunity to own a unique piece of Garbage Pail Kids’ nostalgia.” If the Art by John Pound sticker collection is successful the company has other ideas they want to explore with collectors.

Head on over to HobbyDB’s website to get all the details and links to signup and purchase the cards.
