Topps Announces 2019 Series 1 Garbage Pail Kids We Hate the 90’s

Time to bust out your Pogs, listen to a little grunge, all while eating a Lunchables. Topps is taking on the 90’s! Topps artists have been finished painting the finals for the next set for a few weeks now. Today today officially announced the next retail set, 2019 Series 1 Garbage Pail Kids We Hate the 90’s. This set is a bit of a sequel off the popular set from earlier this year, We Hate the 80’s. This time the set will feature parodies of cartoons, toys, TV, films, video games, fashion, everything 90’s. This is the last set featuring Colin Walton as Art Director/Editor. The set was nearly complete when Colin left Topps.

Just like with the upcoming Oh the Horror-ible set, the next set will feature 200 cards, made up of 100 new pieces of artwork available in a/b versions. The set will continue the practice of being broken into various subsets. The familiar parallel format will return. All Hobby and Retail packs will contain one Puke (Green) parallel. Fool’s Gold parallels will once again be numbered /50, and are available in all pack types. Also, Bruised (Black), Spit (Blue) /99, and Bloody Nose (Red) /75 parallels will only appear in Collector packs. There are two types of insert cards mentioned on the Hobby sell sheet. 90’s Wax Pack Parodies, which will fall 1 per collector box, and also Classic 90’s Stickers. The Classic inserts in the past have been a retail Fat Pack exclusive, but it appears they might be appearing in other pack types this time around.

Artist autographs and printing plates will continue to be found in all pack types. Collector boxes are once again guaranteed one hit per box, either a shaped sketch, artist auto, printing plate, or patch card. Regular sketches can be found in retail pack types, while shaped sketches and triptych sketches are collector box exclusives. Patch cards will also be found only in collector boxes.

Once again the overall construction of the set is familiar to the other theme sets released the past few years. Once we get retail sell sheet info, I will pass it along. For now you can see the sell sheet here in PDF form, or check out the pictures below. 2019S1 GPK We Hate the 90’s is set to hit stores on Jan. 16, 2019.

Topps Releases 2018 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Oh the Horror-ible Checklist

Today Topps released the official checklist for 2018 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Oh the Horror-ible. As was stated in the sell sheets, the base set will contain 200 cards, (100 with a/b versions). This is higher than the past couple of GPK retails sets. The subset format returns once again. In total there are 8 subsets in the base set. The base Subsets are:

  • 80’s Horror Sticker (30 cards/15 a/b)
  • 80’s Sci-Fi Sticker (20 cards/10 a/b)
  • Modern Horror Sticker (30 cards/15 a/b)
  • Modern Sci-Fi Sticker (10 cards/5 a/b)
  • Classic Film Monster Sticker (30 cards/15 a/b)
  • Retro Horror Sticker (30 cards/15 a/b)
  • Retro Sco-Fi Sticker (30 cards/15 a/b)
  • Folklore Monster Sticker (20 cards/15 a/b)

The rest of the checklist is pretty much as expected. Bathroom Buddies, which will appear in both types of blaster boxes has 6 cards on the checklist.  The Jumbo Bonus Classic Monster stickers is 20 cards again. While the “bonus” Horror Film Poster Parodies cards found one per Collector box, once again is at 10 in the set. The patch cards found in Collector boxes remains at 20 cards, and just like We Hate the 80’s appears to use the same cards as the Classic 80’s sticker Jumbo Insert Set. The Trick or Treats insert set originally set for Gravity Feed boxes also appears on the checklist. This 10 card set might be appearing in regular retail boxes. For the first time Topps has listed both the final card artists and sketch artists on the checklist. Eight artists completed finals for the set; Brent Engstrom, David Gross, Joe Simko, JungHwa Im, Layron DeJarnette, Maran Kim, Neil Camera, and Smokin Joe McWilliams. The complete checklist for 2018S2 GPK Oh the Horror-ible can be found here in PDF version.

2018 Series 2 GPK Oh the Horror-ible Sketch Card Preview

Sketch artists have been done with their sketches for the upcoming 2018 Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids Oh the Horror-ible set for a while now. Topps has reviewed them and made their approvals. So why haven’t we seen sketch previews pop up? With the change in leadership in recent weeks over GPK at Topps, the rules have changed slightly. When artists received their approvals, they were instructed not to show their sketches until release date. This is a very short sighted approach from Topps. Topps is missing out on free publicity for the upcoming set. The past has shown that GPK collectors enjoy seeing what they have a chance to pull, and the previews influence their buying decision. It also allows artists to show off their work, and promote commission sales. Despite this decision, a few artists have posted a handful of previews for the upcoming set. A record high 58 artists have completed sketches for the upcoming set. Below is a few of the examples that have been shown so far. (Note that all sketches must be approved by Topps before being inserted into packs. Also, Topps will hold sketches back for replacements.) All photos courtesy of the artist, their Facebook page and/or website. 2018S2 GPK Oh the Horror-ible will hit stores on 9/19/18.

Updated 9/18/18 (Showing sketch previews from 28 of 58 confirmed artists.) Continue reading 2018 Series 2 GPK Oh the Horror-ible Sketch Card Preview

Philly Non-Sports Card Show to Focus on GPK/Wackys

In just over six weeks Garbage Pail Kids collectors on the East Coast will have an opportunity to mingle with some of their favorite GPK artists. The biannual Philly Non-Sports Card Show will once again be ready for collectors on October 20 & 21. The Philly show is the oldest non-sports card show in the country. The upcoming show in October will be the 69th Philly show. The show, which is actually not in Philadelphia but instead in Allentown, PA, takes place at the Merchants Square Mall. With each Philly show there is a focus on a certain non-sports brand. Show organizers are going all out, with the next two Philly Non-Sports shows being GPK and Wacky Packages focused.

The artist line up for upcoming show has six top notch current and former GPK artists. Former original series artist Tom Bunk will lead a group which includes current artists; David Gross, Joe Simko, Smokin’ Joe McWilliams, Layron DeJarnette, and Chad Scheres. The artists will all be on hand selling original art, prints, stickers, cards, and more. Show goers will receive a promo card created by Mark Pingitore. On Sunday, prior to the show opening, there will be a Card Talk panel discussion with all the artists. All the artists are happy to meet the fans. This is a great time to get some quality time with your favorite artist, and help support their art.

With the show focus being on GPK and Wacky Packages, there will be some promo cards available. First off, all attendees to the show will receive a promo card painted by Brent Engstrom. Second, everyone attending the Saturday night show dinner at the Airport Hilton Garden Inn will receive two Halloween themed cards, (one GPK, one Wacky), painted by Joe Simko and Fred Wheaton. The cards will be numbered #1 and #2 in a set. Tom Bunk will also paint a card for dinner attendees. The dinner will be limited to 64 attendees only, and will cost $17.95 per person. Topps has chipped in with a generous donation to help with the artists and to reduce the cost for collectors attending the Saturday night dinner. Smokin’ Joe McWilliams is set to be the guest speaker at the dinner. There will also be prizes from Creepy Co. and Fright Rags. Dinner tickets will sellout. To reserve your spot contact Roxanne Toser at [email protected].

As mentioned above, the focus on GPK/Wackys doesn’t stop with the October Philly show. The 70th Philly Non-Sports show will share the same focus. Show organizers already have a number of things planned for the show taking place on May 4 & 5, 2019. The artists scheduled to attend are Tom Bunk, Mark Pingatore, Fred Wheaton, Jeff Zapata, James Warhola, Neil Camera, and one more TBD. In order to help defray costs for the artists attending the show, they are looking for people to sponsor artists for $250. A couple more sponsorships are available. Sponsors will receive a full color sketch from the artist they sponsor. If interested in sponsoring an artist e-mail Roxanne Toser. The May 2019 show will also feature the next two promo cards in the show dinner set. The cards, #3 & #4, will feature a spring theme and be painted by Layron DeJarnette and Chenduz.

The Philly Non-Sports show features a much different vibe than a Gross Card Con show. With a more relaxed atmosphere, the show floor features nothing but tables selling various non-sport cards. This includes of course a number sellers with GPK merchandise. The show hotel is the Airport Hilton Garden Inn, and a special show rate of $97 is available. Show tickets are available for $8 per day, or a two day pass for $14. The show will be open from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday 10/20, and 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Sunday 10/21. East Coast collectors, don’t miss your chance to meet your favorite GPK artists.

Collectors/Artists Enjoy Gross Card Con Santa Clara

Overlooking California’s Great America theme park and Levi Stadium, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, Garbage Pail Kids artists and collectors from around the country gathered for the latest Gross Card Con. This past weekend was the third Gross Card Con event, this time held at the ToyXpo in Santa Clara, California. This event was smaller in nature compared to previous events in Las Vegas. There were both less artists in attendance and less events planned. However, collectors that did attend had fun spending time with the artists.

Once again the highlight of the show were the nine artists in attendance. Former original GPK artist Tom Bunk lead a group of top notch current artists that included; Brent Engstrom, Joe Simko, David Gross, Layron DeJarnette, Joe McWilliams, Michael Barnard, and Chad Scheres. Former GPK Art Director and artist Jeff Zapata also attended the show. Each artists came selling everything from original GPK artwork and roughs, to their own GPK creations, to prints featuring other themes, to sketches, skateboards, and more. Perhaps the highlight of the show were two skateboard decks hand painted by Joe Simko prior to the show. One deck sold the first 10 mins. of the show opening on Friday. The decks are just gorgeous in person. Continue reading Collectors/Artists Enjoy Gross Card Con Santa Clara

Artists Gearing Up for ToyXpo’s Gross Card Con

Excitement is building as artists and attendees are getting ready for the next Gross Card Con event at the ToyXpo show in Santa Clara. After two successful Gross Card Con (GCC) events the last few years, organizers of the Las Vegas Toy Con have decided to expand the GCC concept. Much like the Vegas Toy Con, the ToyXpo caters mainly to toy and pop culture fans. GCC will once again be an event inside the ToyXpo. While the GCC won’t be as large as the Vegas show or have as many GPK specific events, your favorite GPK artists will be on hand offering their great art. The show is scheduled to take place Aug 24-26 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The show will be open Friday 1:00-9:00, Saturday 10:00 – 8:00, and Sunday 10:00 – 4:00.

Show organizers are planning two GPK events that show goers won’t want to miss. Friday at 6:00 PM in the Great America Ball Room K will be the Q & A artist panel. Many of the artists will be on hand to answer all the GPK fan’s questions. Also Saturday night at 8:00 PM in the Convention Center Theater will be a special screening of 30 Years of Garbage movie. All show ticket holders are invited to attend to see a private showing of the excellent GPK documentary that was released in 2016. If you haven’t seen the move yet, or want to relive it with a bunch of GPK fans, now in your chance!

There will be nine GPK artists attending the show. All previously attended the last GCC show in Vegas this past February. Scheduled to attend are Tom Bunk, Joe Simko, Brent Engstrom, David Gross, Jeff Zapata, Layron DeJarnette, Michael Barnard, Joe McWilliams, and Chad Scheres. Here’s a sampling of what each artist will have to offer. Continue reading Artists Gearing Up for ToyXpo’s Gross Card Con

Topps Europe Officially Announces The Garbage Gang

Details around a new UK Garbage Pail Kids release started to come out earlier this week from Topps Europe. After sharing images of the pack wrappers all this week, the sell sheet is now out. Today Topps Europe officially announced The Garbage Gang. The packs and boxes also include the tagline, “The Most Disgusting Trading Card Game”. As many eagle eyed collectors already deducted, the set appears to be a reprint of the Kakkones release in Italy from 2008.

Just like the Kakkones release, the set contains 96 base cards. The base cards all have a green border. The cards pictured on the sell sheet appear to match up with cards from the original Italian set. The artwork features mostly cards from ANS 1 & 2. There are no a/b versions of each card. Rather just one name is used. Also, unlike most GPK sets, these are not stickers, but rather game cards. The backs of the cards have stats and other information used to play a battle type of game. There will also be 10 Lenticular cards randomly inserted into packs. Those will have a blue border. That’s it, no parallels, no sketches, just an old school ANS type of configuration.

There will be two different configurations available. Each pack will contains 5 cards, with the possibility of pulling a Lenticular card. A retail box contains 24 packs, while a case contains 12 boxes. Each pack carries a retail price of £1.00 (British Pound) or €1.60 (Euros), (roughly $1.30 in US dollars). There will also be a blister pack, called a “Starter Pack”, that contains 1 pack of cards and a mini collector binder. The packaging also suggests there will be a special lenticular card included. Each Starter Pack comes with a retail price of £3.00 (British Pounds) or €4.80 (Euros), (roughly $3.90 in US dollars).

Topps Europe will work with GPKNews as the release gets closer to offer a contest, so stayed tuned! A copy of the sell sheet as a PDF is available here, or you can check out the picture below. The Garbage Gang will be available across the UK on Sept. 27, 2018.

Topps Europe Confirms Upcoming Garbage Gang Release

Update 8/1/18: Topps Europe shared an additional pack image with GPKNews. However no other info about the set is available. Stay tuned to GPKNews for additional details when they become available.

The last time the UK saw a release of Garbage Pail Kids was 2004. It appears that’s about to change. As first reported by GPK collector Rodiguns Fell, Topps Europe has confirmed with GPKNews that they are planning an upcoming release of The Garbage Gang. Details of the upcoming set are scarce at the moment. Topps Europe supplied us with a mockup for one of the pack wrappers. The wrapper features the ANS artwork of Explorin Norman, which was featured on both the US ANS 1 packs and the 2004 UK GPK release. The top of the pack has a blue “The Garbage Gang” banner, along with advertising the pack contains 5 cards. What is really interesting is the tag at the bottom of the pack which says, “The Disgusting Card Game”. This of course leads to a ton of questions, none of which there are answers for yet.

Rodi spoke to a Topps representative this past weekend at the London Film & Comic Con. The Topps rep shared with Rodi that the set would be released this October. They said the cards would be a reissue of the 1991/92 Garbage Gang UK release. He also mentioned the cards would have a yellow border.

Right now those are the only details available on the set. Topps Europe is a subsidiary of Topps in the US. The company was originality Merlin, until it was acquired by Topps in the mid 1990’s. The company is the distributing arm for Topps products in Europe. On their website they sell mainly soccer, Star Wars, WWE, and kids sticker sets. Both the 2018S1 and 2017S2 GPK sets were offered in small quantities to collectors in Europe directly from them, the first time GPK cards were available directly in Europe in over a decade.

GPKNews will keep collectors up to date, once additional details on the set are available.

Colin Walton No Longer GPK Brand Manager

Last night news started to come out that Garbage Pail Kids Brand Manager Colin Walton was no longer with Topps as of last Friday. A spokesperson from Topps confirmed with GPKNews today that Colin left for another company and is no longer working with Topps. According to information shared online, Colin left to join WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).

Colin started working on GPK products during the ANS 7 set. Eventually he became Art Director over the brand during the Flashback 3 set after Jeff Zapata left the company. Topps has released a number of retail sets under his leadership from BNS, Chrome, and the Yearly releases. Colin was also the Brand Manager and Art Director over Wacky Packages, Mars Attacks, and WWE cards.

Topps was not yet willing to share who the new Brand Manager is. Topps says the change will not result in any delays to any currently planned products.

Topps Reveals Print Run for 2018 GPK Summer Comic Convention Set

Topps yearly nod to San Diego Comic Con has ended and the sales results are in. Today Topps revealed the print run for 2018 Garbage Pail Kids Summer Comic Convention online set. Total sales ended at 131 for the seven day period. The high price point, disjointed nature of the set, many cards didn’t fit a comic con theme, and the final art were all common complaints from collectors for the latest release. It’s the lowest sold set since the Shammy awards set earlier this year.
