Topps Announces Print Run for GPK Classic Online Set

Topps On Demand Garbage Pail Kids cards have undergone much change throughout 2017. After slowing down and stopping the daily Trumpocracy cards in July, Topps has been sticking to weekly awards/holiday sets. They decided to change things up a little this past week, but did the experiment end up selling well? Today, Topps revealed the print run for Garbage Pail Kids Classic online set. The changes with this set compared to previous sets were many. The set was double the size of previous online sets at 40 cards, for the first time in an On Demand GPK product an artist sketch is included in each set, the first GPK set to be sold under the Topps On Demand banner, and non-themed cards for the first time On Demand much like the classic GPK sets were in the past. However, some things didn’t change, and collectors were vocal in other items they wanted to see. The price point of the set at $99.99, while in line with current online pricing, ended up pricing out many collectors from purchasing the set. Collectors also taking the “Classic” name to heart wanted to see die-cuts on the cards, numbering on the front, and card back art like awards and puzzle pieces. In the end Topps sold 156 GPK Classic sets. The print run is higher than the last couple of online sets offered.

The question now is, was that enough to make GPK Classic Series 2? Also, what will become of all the artist sketch cards created for the set. 32 artists each created 28 sketches for the set. That’s 896 total sketches. Topps has a couple of options here with these sketches. They were created on card stock that wasn’t themed to a particular set. Topps could use those sketches in a GPK Classic Series 2 set if they choose to make one. The sketches could also be used in any number of future GPK products. Of course Topps could also choose to destroy the sketches after support for the product has ended and they are no longer needed as replacements, (Usually one year.) Only time will tell how Topps views the success of GPK Classic.

Topps Teases Garbage Pail Kids Classic Online Set

We’ve been talking about the soon to come online set GPK Classic for a few weeks now. Today Topps finally begin teasing the Garbage Pail Kids Classic online set. In a post on their GPK Facebook Page, Topps posted two images of cards and announced the set will be coming tomorrow! This is much sooner than anticipated, as sketch cards from artists were not due back to Topps until today. If the set does launch tomorrow, more than likely it will be a few days until it ships. While the number of base cards is unknown, the cards were painted by Brent Engstrom and Joe Simko. Both the cards in the teaser were done by Engstrom. Topps posted two examples as part of their tease. There is no word yet from Topps how the set will be distributed or pricing information. As soon as Topps posts the set online tomorrow, we will bring you all the details.

More Info on Garbage Pail Kids Classic (Mystery Online Set)

It appears the name of the mystery online GPK set Topps is working on will be called Garbage Pail Kids Classic. This at least according to the sketch card information sent to artists this week. The “Classic” name matches up with a similar set being worked on at the same time with the Wacky Packages brand, Old School 6. Here’s what we know about the set as of now.

What can we infer about the name, Garbage Pail Kids Classic? Will the set consist of classic characters, or new characters drawn in the old classic John Pound style? At the same time as this set, Topps is also working on Wacky Packages Old School 6. In fact sketch cards were sent at the same time for this project with the same deadline. The Wacky Packages Old School sets have historically been an ode to the hardcore collector. So the big question is will GPK Classic be a similar product for GPK collectors? While the size of the set is unknown, word is both Brent Engstrom and Joe Simko have completed the artwork already for the base cards.

Speaking of sketches, artists began receiving their sketch blanks this week. Each artist is set to complete 28 sketches for the set with a tight deadline of 9/27. Sketch blanks have the straight blue GPK banner with the yellow nameplate on the front. The backs feature Adam Bomb on a pink background. Very simple classic design, matches the set name. As of right now we have been able to confirm 32 artists working on sketches for the set. The artist list is a mix of veteran and new GPK sketch artists. There are 22 artists who have worked on other sets or are working already on the upcoming sets, they are; Simone Arena, Ro Garcia Astorga, Michael Barnard, Bobby Blakey, Neil Camera, Pat Chaimuang, Jasmine Contois, Jason Crosby, “Chenduz” Vincenzo D’Ippolito, Patrick Giles, Cecilia Granata, Kelly Greider, Kevin Lea, Rory McQueen, Lily Mercado, Rich Molinelli, JM Monserrat, Chad Scheres, Brent Scotchmer, Matt Steffens, and Magnus VonRobotsson. There are also 11 brand new artists making their GPK debut, they are; David Acevedo, Joey Fitchett, Shane Garvey, Daniel Goodroad, J. Hammond, Kecker, Jamison King, Rickey Kipfer, Matt Maldonado, Wilson Ramos, and Matt Stewart. With 32 artists X 28 sketches, right now that will be 896 sketches for the complete print run.

Release date is still a mystery. Wacky Packages Old School 6 is rumored to release in October. However, no information is available for a release of GPK Classic. With the release of the retail GPK set Battle of the Bands, October could shape up to be a very busy month for Garbage Pail Kids.
