2024 Garbage Pail Kids Battle of the Bands Green Day Explained

Just what kind of set is 2024 Garbage Pail Kids Battle of the Bands Green Day? Is it an online set? Is it a Hobby release? Is it a licensed set that didn’t quite serve its initial purpose? It seems to be a combo of all three. This also might be the most controversial GPK set since the political sets nearly a decade ago. Initially the popular Punk Rock band approached Topps to create a large licensed set that celebrates everything Green Day. The band could then sell boxes on their concert tour in 2024. However, this is Topps, and after a number of delays, all of a sudden it was mid 2025 and their concert tour was winding down. Topps decided to pivot, and the result is what was released this week.

The set’s distribution, structure, and content very much resembles the recently released 40th Anniversary set. Topps sold this one via preorder, and launch day sale on their website. Additionally, stores and large online dealers had access to boxes. Topps is calling these Mega boxes in social media, but is listed as Hobby in their product spec section, there no “H” on the box. There is also 10 packs per box, instead of the 8 with the 40th set. Cases are also 20 boxes, double the size of the 40th. Initial pricing from Topps matches the 40th set. Topps is using a regular card stock for the base cards and inserts. The foil stock used on the 40th set is used for the parallels. Where the major differences lie is with the content. There are no reprints here. The entire 100 card base set and all insert sets feature new artwork. Artists Brent Engstrom, Joe Simko, David Gross, Joe McWilliams, and Neil Camera did the majority of the artwork. Rory McQueen (Dookie) and Lowell Isaac (B-Sides) did artwork for an entire insert set. One huge difference is the lack of bigger hits, there are no printing plates, sketches, or artists autos in this release. The relics and autos in the set seem to be very rare based on early case breaks.

Sadly, as of this post, Topps has not released the odds for the set. Multiple sections on their website show the odds as “coming soon”. GPKNews has reached out to Topps, but has not heard back yet. This is a troubling trend by Topps lately. Not only has the company trended into not releasing odds prior to release, but in multiple cases now, odds are not posted after release either. Despite packs stating to goto Topps website to view the odds, and various state gambling laws. GPKNews is working on compiling case break results to reverse engineer the odds. For now, any odds below are based off of case break results, and reveal odds we are confident that are very close to being accurate. Update: Topps did finally release the odds nearly one week after the release. GPKNews will have an article next week looking at production numbers with or without Topps help.
