Topps Reveals Print Run for 2017 GPK Prime Slime Awards Set

Topps celebrated last weekend’s Emmy awards by putting out a 12 card set featuring gags from popular TV shows. However, it doesn’t look like Topps will be winning any awards. Today Topps revealed the print run for 2017 Garbage Pail Kids Awards online set. Historically online sets based around TV shows have not sold well, and this set was no exception. Sales dropped to a total of 87 sets sold. Interesting was Topps initially released the print run as 132 sets, but has since been corrected to 87. Collectors commonly complain that they don’t get the gags on many of the TV related cards. If you don’t watch the show, you won’t understand the gag. The price point for this set was also higher at $39.99 compared to the recent music sets released. This all led to a lower number of sales than usual. With the holidays right around the corner, let’s hope Topps has some plans for Halloween!

More Info on Garbage Pail Kids Classic (Mystery Online Set)

It appears the name of the mystery online GPK set Topps is working on will be called Garbage Pail Kids Classic. This at least according to the sketch card information sent to artists this week. The “Classic” name matches up with a similar set being worked on at the same time with the Wacky Packages brand, Old School 6. Here’s what we know about the set as of now.

What can we infer about the name, Garbage Pail Kids Classic? Will the set consist of classic characters, or new characters drawn in the old classic John Pound style? At the same time as this set, Topps is also working on Wacky Packages Old School 6. In fact sketch cards were sent at the same time for this project with the same deadline. The Wacky Packages Old School sets have historically been an ode to the hardcore collector. So the big question is will GPK Classic be a similar product for GPK collectors? While the size of the set is unknown, word is both Brent Engstrom and Joe Simko have completed the artwork already for the base cards.

Speaking of sketches, artists began receiving their sketch blanks this week. Each artist is set to complete 28 sketches for the set with a tight deadline of 9/27. Sketch blanks have the straight blue GPK banner with the yellow nameplate on the front. The backs feature Adam Bomb on a pink background. Very simple classic design, matches the set name. As of right now we have been able to confirm 32 artists working on sketches for the set. The artist list is a mix of veteran and new GPK sketch artists. There are 22 artists who have worked on other sets or are working already on the upcoming sets, they are; Simone Arena, Ro Garcia Astorga, Michael Barnard, Bobby Blakey, Neil Camera, Pat Chaimuang, Jasmine Contois, Jason Crosby, “Chenduz” Vincenzo D’Ippolito, Patrick Giles, Cecilia Granata, Kelly Greider, Kevin Lea, Rory McQueen, Lily Mercado, Rich Molinelli, JM Monserrat, Chad Scheres, Brent Scotchmer, Matt Steffens, and Magnus VonRobotsson. There are also 11 brand new artists making their GPK debut, they are; David Acevedo, Joey Fitchett, Shane Garvey, Daniel Goodroad, J. Hammond, Kecker, Jamison King, Rickey Kipfer, Matt Maldonado, Wilson Ramos, and Matt Stewart. With 32 artists X 28 sketches, right now that will be 896 sketches for the complete print run.

Release date is still a mystery. Wacky Packages Old School 6 is rumored to release in October. However, no information is available for a release of GPK Classic. With the release of the retail GPK set Battle of the Bands, October could shape up to be a very busy month for Garbage Pail Kids.

Topps Working on Online Exclusive GPK Release

Beyond that nothing else is known about the set other than its for an online release. Let the speculation begin! More info to come as Topps announces the product.

Topps Reveals Print Run for GPK 2017 Empty-V Awards Online Set

For the first time in months, Topps decided to put out back to back sets. Both sets were themed based on various popular music artists. Just like the ratings for the MTV Video Awards show, GPK collectors were lukewarm to the online set. Today Topps revealed the print run for Garbage Pail Kids 2017 Emtpy-V Awards online set. Sales for this set were a small fraction of the previous week’s Best of the Fest set. All cards in the set finished in the 90’s for total sales. Once again Topps revealed sales for the complete sets sold at 92. Those sales show that 4 of the 6 cards were not purchased individually, as they also finished with 92. Turns out this is the biggest difference from the Best of the Fest set, as those cards all had solid individual sales. Here is how the final totals came out.

  • Complete Set – 92
  • 1A: Uncaring Kendrick/1B: Lackadaisical Lamar – 92
  • 2A: LORD LORDE/2B: EMINENT ELLA – 93
