Lightning Strikes Twice, Collector Pulls First Red Border Comic Cards

Do you believe in miracles? Well Garbage Pail Kids collector DJ Spencer does after tonight. DJ posted to Facebook tonight his haul after visiting his local comic store. He bought all the Deluxe versions of the last two IDW GPK comics that store had in stock.

After opening them to his shock he pulled the first known Red Border version of the Over Killian card. Like the yellow version the card is not numbered on the back. Its believed 10 copies of the card exists.

But that’s not all. DJ also pulled the first known Red Border version of the Felicia Fantasy card! This one is numbered 3/10 on the back of the card.

IDW Rep Reveals Odds for Comic Cards

With the release of the 4th one shot IDW GPK Comic, “Gross Encounters of the Turd Kind”, IDW has continued the tradition of inserting promo cards into the Deluxe version of the comic. This time around collectors noticed the yellow border of the promo card was not numbered /100 like the two previous releases. So, GPK collector Dustin Wells decided to call IDW to find out more details.

Dustin was able to find out a lot of information on the history of the comic cards. Dustin asked the IDW sales specifically about the first comic card, Comic-Con Ron. The rep told Dustin that there were four colored borders released; white, black, yellow, and red. Reds were numbered to 10, Yellows to 100, Blacks were 1/5 the production run of whites, and White borders made up the remaining cards.

Here’s the problem with some of the information the rep shared. To date only one red border is known to have been pulled, it also has a lone 1 on the back of the card. The assumption is there are still 9 remaining copies out there numbered, 2, 3, 4, etc. On the yellow borders to date none are known to exist. A few collectors recently repeated third hand knowledge that Topps was late in providing IDW with the yellow border version of Comic-Con Ron, therefore those were not inserted into the first GPK Comic. Dustin has another call into the rep to find out and clarify more information about the cards.

So here is what we know now based on what cards have surfaced, info from the IDW sales rep, and other collector information.

Comic #1 – Puketucular (Comic-Con Ron Promo card)

White Border – Inserted at the most common rate.
Black Border – Inserted at 1/5 the rate of the white border.
Yellow Border – Was not inserted into comics. Has never surfaced.
Red Border – 10 copies exist according to IDW rep. Only one has surfaced numbered “1” on the back.

Changes Made to 4th Comic Promo Card

comic4cardWith the release of IDW’s 4th one shot Garbage Pail Kids comic comes the continued practice of including a special promo card in the Deluxe Version of the comic. As with every release so far we now have some confirmation that different color border parallels exists in the comics.

Thanks to Kevin Johnson over at Gotham City Comics we got our first look at the cards. In a small sample size Kevin opened 6 of the Deluxe versions of the comic. He pulled 3 white borders, and 3 yellow borders. Given the small sample size its not possible to determine the rarity of the different versions.

There is a huge change to the yellow border version of the card. In the previous two comic releases the yellow border card was numbered on the back /100. This time around the card is not numbered. Does this mean there are more than 100 yellows? Or is the card limited but just not numbered? Once more people start busting open the comics it should become clear how rare yellow is this time around.

Another change is to the cards backs. This time the 30th anniversary card set is being advertised. However, the card no longer contains a card number like previous releases. See below for pictures of the card front and back curtiosy of Kevin Johnson. As more versions of the card and info about rarity comes about this article will be updated.

Update 6/30/15 @ 10:45

GPK collector DJ Spencer did the seemly impossible and pulled the Red Border version of Over Killian this evening. Just like the yellow borders the card is not numbered on the back. It is believed there are 10 copies of the red border. It does exist!

Topps Announces 30th Anniversary Set

2015gpk30This year Topps is celebrating the 30th anniversary of producing Garbage Pail Kids. They’ve decided to go big for the special set due to be released 7/8/15. The base set will contain 220 cards! As usual there will be “a” and “b” varieties of each card available making 110 different paintings.

The larger set size allows Topps to have multiple themes this time around. In 2015 Series 1 Topps used a baseball theme. This time there will be 11 different subsets that make up the base set. Categories such as Comic Book Covers, Cutting Room Floor, Garbage Pail Pets, and Garbage Pail Presidents highlight a few of these themes.

Of course a GPK set doesn’t stop at just the base set. Topps will include three insert sets; Movie Scenes, Horror Film, and Super Fan Tattoo Stickers. Other popular inserts return for this set including “C” card short prints, Artist Autos, Sketches, and Printing Plates. New inserts for this set include Foreign Legion Stickers. These will be cards done in other languages and inserted only in Hobby packs. These look to be replacing Bonus Cards in boxes this year. Also new are GPK Buyback cards, and Barf Bag Box Loaders….yes Barf Bags.

Base card parallels also return in Black, Silver (Hobby only), Gold, Metallic Red (Collector), Character Back (Collector), Sepia (Collector), and Pink (Collector). This time around the Character backs will come one per pack in Collector’s Boxes, while the Pinks will be one per Collector’s Box.

One interesting note for this series is how Topps is changing the Collector’s Boxes. In previous series Topps guaranteed a hit in each box. The sell sheet makes no mention of this for the 30th set. The only guarantees are the Collector’s Box parallels/inserts and a Barf Bag Box Loader. However, Topps is offering quite the number of hits that will only be found in Collector’s boxes such as Artist Relics, Medallion Cards, Stamp Relics, Auto Pen Relics, and Duel/Triple Auto cards. Will be interesting to see how often these fall in packs.
