Award season ended last weekend as the yearly Academy Awards show passed out the Oscars. After skipping the first batch of awards shows, Topps released an online exclusive set based on this years Oscars. Today Topps revealed the print run for the 2019 Garbage Pail Kids Not-Scars online set. In total the set sold 375 copies. While the number is down from the recent On Demand releases, it’s a great number for an awards set. In fact this is the highest selling awards set Topps has produced. Collectors quickly sold out recent On Demand releases such as Valentine’s is Gross, and the GPK Coloring Book. This set did not contain any sketches or parallels and thus was not limited. The set was for sale the entire 7 days on topps.com. With the set being a surprise launch it will be interesting to see where Topps puts their online focus the remainder of the year. We most certainly will see additional On Demand sets, but with record numbers for the awards set, surely more of those types of sets will be on the way?

Just when you thought Topps was done with awards sets…Today Topps launched 2019 Garbage Pail Kids Not-Scars online set. This is a surprise from Topps. Topps seemingly was skipping over the awards season this year. But after three hugely successful On Demand GPK releases, Topps seems to be taking a step back to the awards sets of the past couple of years. This year’s 12 card set features six new paintings, (available in a/b versions), all completed by artist David Gross. The gags all parody many of the best picture nominees for this weekend’s upcoming Academy Awards show. Unlike the most recent Valentine’s set, there is no new back card art for this set. Card numbers and the “peel here” arrow will be appearing on the fronts. The entire set can be purchased for $24.99 in the brand new Garbage Pail Kids Online section of topps.com. Shipping in the US is free, while international shipping varies. The set will be available online for 7 days. Topps will reveal the print run at the end of the sale. Here is the checklist.
1A. Gashed GAGA
1B. Starstruck STEFANI
2A. Bathroom Break BRADLEY
2B. A STAN is Born
3A. Bohemian RAMI
3B. Flossing FREDDIE
4A. THEA Favourite
4B. EMMA Execution
5A. Deranged DICK
5B. Crackpot CHRISTIAN
6A. Host LES
Well that didn’t take long. Less than four hours after going on sale, the Topps On Demand #2 2019 Garbage Pail Kids Valentine’s Day is Gross online set sold out. Collectors and resellers were quick to jump on this set. A total of 800 sets were available through Topps.com starting just before 2 PM Eastern time. Just after 5:30 PM the sets were no longer for sale. This marks the fastest sellout of a GPK online set. Last year’s Meme set sold out in just about 12 hours. With the quick sellouts expect future print runs of the sets to increase. The question now on collector’s minds is if Topps has fixed the shipping issues they had with the Meme set.
Update: Topps posted the official print run as 750 sets. It could be because Topps is holding back some of the sketches for replacements for damaged shipments, which is a common practice.
This Valentine’s Day Topps begins to try to win back the hearts of GPK collectors! Today Topps launched On Demand Set #2 Garbage Pail Kids 2019 Valentine’s Day is Gross. After starting the year off with a very popular coloring book, Topps is back with an On Demand set similar in configuration to last year’s GPK Meme set. It appears that Topps might be listening as some changes to the cards are evident in this new set.
This 20 card base set features 10 pieces of new artwork, (a/b versions), from the same artists that did the Meme set. Artists Brent Engstrom, David Gross, Joe Simko, Smokin Joe McWilliams, and Neil Camera all completed two pieces for the set. The cards feature classic male characters on the fronts, trying to woo classic female characters on the backs! Wait….what?!?!? Back art? Yes! In the biggest change since 2014 the new set features brand new back art, completed by the same artists that did the front of the cards. The backs are based off of OS Wanted Posters that show the character with her “likes” and “dislikes”. Not only is there back art, but card numbers and the “Peel Here” arrow has returned to the front of the cards!!! There also appears to be a checklist card back. “C” cards are back again. Each set purchased comes with one “C” card. Green and Pink parallels also return from the Meme set. Each set purchased comes with one Pink and three Green bordered cards.
All five artists also completed sketches for the new online set. This time all the sketches are based on OS 2 characters. In another welcome change from the Meme set, Topps used brand new sketch card stock for this set. Each artist was asked to complete 80 sketches this time, an increase over the Meme set. Once again sketches fall at 1:2 sets. This means if it sells out, the print run of this set will be at 800 sets. The Meme set had a print run of 500 sets. This would put the print run of the C cards at 80, Pink borders at 40, and green borders at 120.
The set is available for $40.00, the same price as the GPK Meme set. Free shipping in the US is being offered via the SmartPost option, while international shipping varies. The set is available on topps.com for 7 days, although the previous Meme set sold out within 2 days. Topps has a 20 set limit per customer. Topps will reveal the print run at the end of the sale. Let’s hope Topps also fixes the shipping issues that the Meme set had. Here is a checklist of the set, and a couple of pictures of the cards.

Notice anything interesting in the picture? Are those card numbers and “peel here” arrows on the front??? The set is expected to go on sale on Topps.com tomorrow.
We are just three weeks away from the next Gross Card Con. This year’s show is part of the Vegas Toy Con, held at the Westgate Casino in Las Vegas from March 1-3. Once again, the show will offer an exclusive card set created by the artists. That’s not all! There will also be Scavenger Hunt cards, and an official Topps promo card available at the show. Clint Coleman from GPK & Wacky Warehouse produces all the show exclusive cards. He shared with GPKNews all the details around this year’s cards. Read on to find out what will be offered.
As announced last week by artist David Gross, there will be an officially licensed Topps promo card for the first time at Gross Card Con. The Married With Children parody will come in both an a and b version. Show goers will have a few options to obtain these cards. 1) VIPs will automatically receive both versions of the card at their VIP Saturday breakfast. 2) Purchase the glossy show exclusive set (see details below) and receive both cards. Each set purchased will receive both cards, there is a limit of two sets per customer, per day of the show. 3) Attend the artist Q&A session. The first 50 people to attend the Q&A session will receive one card, (a or b). The artist Q&A is scheduled to take place at 11:00 AM Saturday at the show.
This year’s show exclusive set will be an extra large 24 card set featuring artwork from 12 different artists. The set has two themes, 12 unpublished gags, and 12 toys. David Gross did three paintings for the set, Layron DeJarnette did one, and Tom Bunk, Brent Engstrom, Joe Simko, Joe McWilliams, Mark Pingitore, Jeff Zapata, Michael Barnard, Chenduz, Chad Scheres, and Jon Gregory did two each. The set will be available in two different versions, Glossy and Canvas. Each set will be limited to 100 available to purchase at the show. The print run of the Glossy set is 250, with the remaining cards being given to show promoters, artists, and to be sold after the show. The Glossy set will cost $50, while the Canvas set will be $40. There will be a special show promotion, you can purchase both sets for $80. VIP holders will receive a Glossy set as part of their package. While the Canvas set won’t come with any extras, the Glossy set will come with the Topps promo cards and a chance at pulling a special show redemption. Redemptions will fall roughly 1:5 sets, and include a chance to get a sketch card from one of the 12 artists from the set, merchandise credits from GPK & Wacky Warehouse, or a large medal art card printed by Faeire Metal company. Only glossy sets purchased at the show will receive the Topps promo cards and have a chance at a redemption. Sets will be available for purchase from the GPK & Wacky Warehouse booth at the show. The artists have revealed some of their cards for the set. Here is a gallery showing many of the cards.
Finally, there will be a GPK Scavenger Hunt during the show. Four Topps sketch artists attending the show, Shane Garvey, Barry Nygma, David Acevedo, and Shawn Cruz all painted a card to be used during the hunt. The four cards will be hidden around the show venue throughout the weekend. The artists will also have copies of the cards available at their booth. VIP holders will also receive all four cards in their package. Here are a couple of examples of the scavenger hunt cards.
These are just the cards show promoters have planned for the show. Each artist has so much more planned for this year’s Gross Card Con. GPKNews will have another article just before the event showing many of the goodies available from each artist. If you haven’t booked your room yet, now is your chance!
Two weeks ago Topps posted their first online Garbage Pail Kids product of 2019. The ABC’s of GPK Coloring book features 26 pages of classic characters to color. In addition each book comes with one A is For Adam card, either with a green, pink, or gold border. The lure of an Adam Bomb themed card proved popular with collectors as the product sold out on topps.com a few days ago. Customers attempting to order the product the last few days were met with no, “add to cart” option on the product page. The new Topps website design made it difficult to tell if the product was sold out. Now that the sale is over Topps revealed that the print run of the coloring book is 1000 copies. There was no mention of a breakdown yet of how many green, pink, or gold A is for Adam cards were produced. However, Topps must have had a breakdown of each border available, as there would be no other reason to limit an “on demand” offering. Surely by selling out there will be a coloring book #2 in the future.
Artist David Gross announced today his artwork based on an Al Bundy gag will be an officially licensed Topps Garbage Pail Kids Promo card at the upcoming Gross Card Con. Both VIP holders and event attendees purchasing a show exclusive card set will receive both the a and b versions of the card. In addition the first 50 attendees to arrive for the artist’s card chat will receive one random version. The card features Al Bundy from the popular 90’s TV show, Married Wirh Children. The back of the card advertises the current GPK retail set, We Hate the 90’s, and features sponser logos of ToyCon and GPK & Wacky Warehouse. This year’s Gross Card Con is set to take place March 1-3 in Las Vegas at the Westgate Resort.
