Topps Announces 2017 Series 1 Garbage Pail Kids Adam-Geddon

imageTopps today announced 2017 Series 1 Garbage Pail Kids Adam-Geddon. The series is setup much like both 2016 series were. Once again there will be a 220 card base set, this time focusing on on GPKs in end of the world scenarios such as flooding, meteors, zombie attacks, etc. Topps is making one huge change for this series. The cards per pack for both Hobby and Collector packs are changing. Both pack types will now come with 8 cards per pack. This is a change from previous sets that offered 10 card for Hobby packs and 6 cards per Collector pack.

The same parallels return once again with slight changes. According to the sell sheet Puke parallels will fall in Retail packs and Hobby packs this time. Bruised parallels will fall one per Collector pack. Spit parallels numbered to 99 and Bloody Nose parallels numbered to 75 will also be found in Collector packs. Also found only in Collector boxes will be the Best of 2017 US Presidential Election cards, featuring reused artwork from the recent online sets but with new names. Fool’s Gold parallels numbered to 50 will also return in all pack types.

In another move to apparently closely match Hobby and Retail boxes, regular sketch cards can be found in both Retail and Hobby packs this time. While Shaped Sketch , Double Artist Panoramic Sketch, and Patch cards will be found in Collector packs. It appears once again each Collector box is guaranteed one hit. Artist autographs and Printing Plates are also mentioned being included as a possible hits in Collector boxes.

You can view the sell sheet in PDF here, or see pictures below. There are also examples of the new cards for the set. 2017 Series 1 GPK Adam-Geddon will hit store shelves on Jan. 18, 2017.

The yearly San Diego Comic Con is this weekend. Thousands will flock to southern California hoping to grab all the free stuff and purchase all the rare toys they can. What’s available GPK related? There are a few booths to check out at this year’s show to find some GPK goodies.

As we reported a couple of weeks back, Topps is offering two new 10 card Jumbo GPK sets. Both the Presidential Candidates set and the Trashy TV Preview set can be purchased for $20 each at the Atomic Toy Box booth #3921.

The Abrams Books booth #1216 has a number of Topps related books for sale including the 2012 GPK book. The book features pictures from the first 5 OS series and includes a special 4 card set within the book.

The PSA cards grading booth #5617 is giving away this month SMR magazine. This month’s magazine features a great article in PSA graded OS 1 cards with quotes from many collectors.

There will also be many booths selling Funko toys, where you can find the new Trump/Clinton Funkos and the previous 12 figure series.

Wear Your Favorite GPK Candidate!

Thanks to collector Stephen Sodergren for being the first to point these out. It looks like you can now wear your favorite Garbage Pail Kid Presidential Candidate. Using artwork from the New Hampshire Presidential Candidates online set, both Donald Dumpty and Billary Hillary have been made into t-shirts. The shirts appears to be in only FYE stores right now, as multiple collectors are finding the shirts there in the past week. Go out and support or not support your favorite candidate!

GPK Apple Pie Blisters from Fairfield/Excell Show Up in Stores

blister2GPK collector Ronnie Pasillas looks to be the first to come across a new Blister pack of Garbage Pail Kids American as Apple Pie packs in stores. Packaged by the Fairfield Company, a division of Excell Marketing. Inside each Blister is two retail packs of GPK AAAP. Ronnie found these at his local Rite Aid store for $4.99 each. A few weeks back collectors began to notice Excell had pulled AAAP packs from Target instead of letting them sit on the shelves as is usual. It would appear those packs are now showing up as part of these Blisters. Earlier this year Fairfield/Excell launched a very successful Trash Box consisting of previous released 2012-2014 packs of GPK. Thanks to Ronnie for the info!

2016 GPK Trashy TV Sketch Artist Lineup Takes Shape/Topps Changes Sketch Return Rules

Article updated 10/10/`6 to remove Chris Koning and add Yeldarb.

Article updated 8/21/16 to add Daniel Contois..

Article updated 8/2/16 to add Cathy Razim.

Article updated 7/7/16 to add Rich Molinelli.

Article updated on 6/26/16 to add Lowell Isaac, and remove Mark Pingitore.

image002Official Topps sketch artists began receiving their blank sketch cards this week for the Garbage Pail Kids 2016 Series 2 Prime Slime Trashy TV set. The photos posted by some of the artists on Facebook show OS 1 character Tee-Vee Stevie is used as the artwork for the back of the cards, sticking to the television theme for the set. Also of note is the green nameplate on the regular sized sketch cards.

File Jun 15, 12 58 34 AM

Confirmed returning for Topps are 18 sketch artists from the last series, 2016 Series 1 American As Apple Pie; Simone Arena, Michael Barnard, Neil Camera, “GPK” Dave Dabila, Vincenzo “Chenduz” D’Ippolito, Cecilia Granata, Jon Gregory, Robert Jimenez, Matthew Kirscht, Chris Meeks, Lily Mercado, JM Monserrat, Sean Norvet, Steve Potter, Chad Scheres, Denis St. John, Dan Burn Webster, and Jeff Zapata. There are four artists who were part of 2016 Apple Pie and will not be returning for this series. Veteran GPK artists Layton DeJarnette, Brent Engstrom, and Mark Pingitore will not be completing sketch cards, along with popular artist Dustin Graham who mentioned he should return in 2017. Engstrom and Pingitore will continue to paint finals for the set.

While 2016 Apple Pie hosted the largest artist sketch lineup to date, Topps is blowing that out of the water by adding at least 16 new sketch artists to the mix. The confirmed new artists so far are; Daniel Contois, Sobot Cortez, Jason Crosby, Patrick Giles, Dennis Gortakowski, Kelly Greider, Jason Heil, Marisol Henriquez, Lowell Isaac, Ryan Moffett, Rich Molinelli, Barry Nygma, Cathy Razim, Matt Steffens, Magnus Von Robotsson, and Yeldarb. Patrick Giles, Jason Crosby, and Daniel Contois have drawn for other Topps brands in the past, while Lowell Isaac, Rich Molinelli, and Cathy Razim are veteran artists. The remaining new artists are well known GPK fan artists who have been drawing GPK characters for years. The one mystery is Yeldarb, who while that is Bradley spelled backwards, no one can quite figure out who this artist is. This brings the known total of sketch artists to 34 for the new series.

In addition to increasing the artist lineup for the next series, Topps also made a controversial policy change for artists when it comes to their Return Sketch Cards. Return Sketches are sketch cards artists are allowed to keep and sell individually themselves. In previous GPK sets Return Sketches could be approved by Topps management via scan/email, and could be completed after the set’s release. New rules put in place by Topps now forces artists to complete all their Returns prior to the set being released, and they also now have to mail the returns in for approval from Topps. Topps will in turn mail back the cards once approved. Many artists were not happy with the changes because it not only forces them to rush on the return sketches that are generally more intricate than a normal sketch, and artists are worried about lost sketch cards in the handoff from them to Topps and back. Because of the changes, sketch artists have been actively offering commissions for their Return Sketches. Be sure to reach out to your favorite artist quickly if you want one of their Return Sketches for the upcoming set before they sell out.
